The Enterprise Zone program was designated as a response to a series of discouraging economic events in Evansville. Until the early eighties, our economy was largely dependent on manufacturing. Then many factories closed, downsized, or relocated outside the U.S. Nearly three million square feet of industrial space lay vacant or underutilized. Unemployment soared as workers were left without jobs.
The Enterprise Zone program introduced an economic development plan that included incentives for employers operating within the area. The results have been impressive.
